I might step on the toes of my fellow Christian counselors, but I'm taking to task the common use of 2 Corinthians 10:5 as the basis for Christian cognitive-behavioral therapy. Teaching that you must take EVERY thought or idea in your head and analyze it and change it to "make it obedient to Christ" can be overwhelming and burdensome for people prone to anxiety and OCD (and addiction). Instead, I propose Psalm 46:10 as the basis for a more mindful approach to intrusive and distorted thoughts.

During the Alliance for Therapeutic Choice & Scientific Integrity online conference Aug. 28 & 29, 2026, a topic came up in our Q&A. I expounded on a phenomenon I've observed with certain male clients that contributes to some degree to their homosexuality. These clients come from strict religious upbringings that emphasize the purity of women. These anxious clients then internalize this as a block against their own heterosexual development.
